Developmental Hip Dysplasia (Congenital Hip Dislocation)
Generally, it is a condition where the hip is out of place. This condition describes either a completely dislocated hip, where the thigh bone (femur) and the socket in the pelvic bone (acetabulum) in the hip are completely disconnected, or a semi-dislocated hip, where the harmony is disrupted but a part of the thigh bone is out or displaced upwards, or a hip that can be dislocated with special maneuvers (Barlow maneuver) due to the excessive looseness in the ligaments of the joint.
Congenital hip dislocation occurs in the early stages of pregnancy due to genetic and hormonal reasons, while in the late stages of pregnancy it occurs due to the baby not completing its rotation in the womb or due to pressure on the hip. After birth, the use of swaddling causes hip dislocation.
The first thing to do when making a diagnosis will be a detailed physical examination. Early screening hip ultrasound is important. Hip X-rays are important from the 4th month onwards.
Treatment is planned depending on the cause and the time the disease is detected. In the form that is due to diseases related to genetic reasons, surgery may generally be required in the early period. However, in the form that is due to mechanical reasons, if diagnosed early, it can be treated with special bandages. In case of late diagnosis, it is treated with plaster treatment from the 6th month and with surgery after the age of 1.
